Soil studies to better understand our terroir

The Château Margaux estate is situated on a diverse range of soils, including a gravel plateau, typical of the Margaux appellation. Over millennia, successive geological layers have shaped a mosaic of soils, resulting in a truly unique terroir.

Our teams regularly conduct studies to gain a deeper understanding of the soils in which our vines take root. Soil pits are excavated to examine the various soil profiles and collect samples. This work serves three primary objectives:

  • Selecting the plant material best suited to each type of soil, particularly when replanting.

  • Understanding variations in vine behaviour across the vineyard (vigour, quality potential, precocity).

  • Identifying distinct zones within a single plot that may need separate harvesting and vinification (a practice we refer to as "intra-plot" vinification).

Carried out across many areas of the estate, these studies provide us with a better understanding of our terroir. These insights are essential to adjust our practices, not just to each plot, but to each vine. Combined with the expertise of our teams, this knowledge allows us to improve our approach with precision, ensuring optimal grape ripeness and the production of wines of the highest quality.
