Rebottling at Château Margaux

Château Margaux’s cellars contain numerous bottles of past vintages: each bottle reflects our quest for excellence and ancestral expertise. To ensure their quality and longevity, the property’s stock is rebottled on average every 40 years.
All the bottles of older vintages are inspected and then tasted one by one by our teams. Thanks to their expertise and rigorous standards, only bottles judged to be in perfect condition are rebottled. Every stage in this process is carried out with the utmost precision, to ensure that our old vintages continue to reflect the elegance and complexity for which they are renowned.
While the cork is being replaced we use cutting-edge technology to saturate the air with nitrogen, eliminating any contact between the wine and oxygen and thereby preserving its overall balance. After tasting, the bottles are topped up with wine from the same vintage. The bottles are then carefully recorked, using natural corks for the red wines and Diam30 corks for the white wines. The year of recorking is recorded on the top of the cork as part of our traceability and quality procedures. A new back label is also applied, stating that the bottle has been tasted and recorked on the property, and the year in which this was carried out.
This procedure illustrates the meticulous care and expertise of our teams, who work tirelessly to preserve Château Margaux’s heritage.
